    Of Local Interest Marylebone

    Marylebone W1 is the area of London’s West End bounded by Portland Place to the East, Edgeware Road to the West, between Marylebone Rd and Oxford St. The name is derived from St. Mary’s-by-the-Bourne i.e St Mary’s by the river presumably referring to the Tyburn which runs (though today culverted) through the heart of the district, and not ‘Mary le Bonne’ as sometimes incorrectly assumed. The area was acquired by Henery VIII who kept a deer park there in the 16th Century.  After various exchanges of ownership the area was developed as fashionable housing for the gentry from the end of the 18th Century, in large part by the Portman family and Duke of Portland giving their names to much of the local geography.
