Camden Town, or more precisely Camden Lock and Chalk Farm, was at the beginning of the 1800s an important hub for goods arriving into London by rail and canal from, primarily, Birmingham, but also elsewhere. In order to serve the distribution of  these goods, a network of subterranean tunnels was built to allow horses access to shunt rail goods between underground yards and various warehouse basements. There was also a  subterranean canal basin which linked this distribution point into the canal network (at the time gradually being replaced by the railway). To serve the huge numbers of horses employed in the movement of goods in the area, extensive stables and even a horse hospital was created.  In recent years some of these stables, horse hospital and tunnels have been brought back into life as the Stables and more recently the Horse tunnel markets. However, much of underground site remains intact and presently unused. This includes the extensive East and West tunnels (towards Hawly Cres. and Primrose Hill respectively) and  disused steam railway link with Euston known  quaintly as ‘The Rat Hole’. You can visit the fascinating Subterranea Britannica website and follow links to find out more about these and other lost underground London sites.
